General manager Stan Bowman also could seek to bolster the lineup via trade. In the meantime, the Hawks’ recalled Teravainen, activated Trevor van Riemsdyk from long-term IR and then sent the rookie defenseman to Rockford. They also placed Kane on IR, a series of moves that opened up roughly $6 million of salary-cap space.

Meanwhile, the worst-case scenario for the Hawks regarding the time Kane will miss is a significant blow to the chances — and psyche — of a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.

“I can’t count the number of times Kaner has missed a shift on one hand in his career let alone not return to the game,” Sharp said. “He brings so much to our team. He’s having a great season individually and he makes us a better team in a lot of areas.”

The Hawks now must regroup for the final 21 games of the regular season.

“It’s just another blow,” Sharp said. “It happens every season, whether it’s injuries, losing streaks, you name it. It’s just another obstacle to climb.”
